itc Architectural Lighting Illuminates Jepak Bridge, Bintulu, Malaysia

Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge (formerly the Bintulu Jepak Bridge) is a vital crossing located in Sarawak, Malaysia, spanning the Kemena River and linking Bintulu with the Jepak area. The bridge, approximately 1.2 kilometres long, features a dual-tower, dual-plane cable-stayed design carrying two lanes of traffic in each direction. It is the first bridge of its scale in East Malaysia and was built at an estimated cost of around RM466 million.

Officially opened to traffic in March 2025, the bridge was renamed Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge in July in honor of the late leader whose contributions to the state's development were profoundly significant. The Premier of Sarawak has described the bridge as a symbol of the people's shared ambition for unity and modernization. Beyond reducing travel time between the two banks from over 30 minutes to just a few minutes, the bridge powers the development of commerce, residents, and industry in the Jepak area.

The project was undertaken by a joint venture comprising Chinese and Malaysian contractors. The Chinese team brought advanced engineering techniques and management experience, ensuring the smooth progress of the entire project. In parallel with the structural works, itc was appointed to upgrade the bridge's lighting and transform the crossing into a nighttime landmark.

itc Architectural Lighting Solution

itc deployed over a thousand high-performance linear LED wall washers mounted along the guardrails on both sides of the span, creating a seamless, uninterrupted ribbon of light that traces the elegant curve of the bridge. The uniform wash effect not only improves driver visibility but also casts a striking reflection on the surface of the Kemena River, dramatically enhancing the visual impact.

In addition, a series of powerful LED floodlights was strategically installed on the cables and piers. These fixtures deliver high-lumen output, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow that accentuates the bridge's monumental scale. The careful coordination of color and intensity between the linear washers and floodlights ensures a harmonious and dynamic visual identity.

All itc luminaires used in the project are LED-based, chosen for their high luminosity, energy efficiency, IP protection ratings, and long operational life. These attributes significantly reduce environmental impact while maintaining outstanding performance over the long term. Furthermore, the system is designed with intelligent control capabilities, allowing precise programming of lighting effects to create themed nightscapes suitable for different occasions.

Since commissioning, the lighting upgrade has been widely praised by municipal authorities and residents. Now shimmering gracefully over the Kemena River, the bridge stands as an enduring symbol of Sarawak's progress, a source of pride for its people, and a shining testament to itc's dedication to illuminating the world.
